COLUMBIA, S.C. – Fifty-eight high school students from across South Carolina will be in Columbia this week for an up-close look at how the state’s electric cooperatives are preparing for the future.  The rising high school seniors will tour renewable energy sites, meet with state government leaders, explore careers in the electric industry and take rides in an array of all-electric vehicles.

The Cooperative Youth Summit, in its second year, takes place Tuesday, July 10, through Friday, July 13.  Interested media are invited to attend any or all of the events listed below:

 

Tuesday, July 10

  • 1 p.m. – Students tour a community solar farm at Black River Electric Cooperative, 1121 North Pike Road, West, Sumter, SC 29151

 

Wednesday, July 11

  • 7:15 a.m. – Students tour the S.C. Statehouse grounds
  • 11:30 a.m. – Students meet with S.C. Rep. Beth Bernstein. Blatt Building, room 112 at the Statehouse complex

 

Thursday, July 12

  • 8:30 a.m. – Electrical safety demonstration at Mid-Carolina Electric Cooperative, 254 Longs Pond Road, Lexington, SC, 29071
  • 9:30 a.m. – Bucket truck rides, pole climbing demonstrations and co-op career education, Mid-Carolina Electric Cooperative
  • 12:45 p.m. – Students will participate in a community service project called “Kid’s Closet” where they will pack needed supplies to be given to deserving school children throughout S.C., Mid-Carolina Electric Cooperative

 

Friday, July 13

  • 9 a.m. - Students will tour the Richland County Landfill Gas-to-Energy facility operated by Santee Cooper at 1445 Screaming Eagle Road, Elgin, SC 29045
  • 10:30 a.m. – Students will see and ride in a variety of electric vehicles including an all-electric Chevy Bolt at The Electric Cooperatives of S.C., 808 Knox Abbott Drive, Cayce, SC 29033
