Nearly 60 young electric cooperative members from across South Carolina spent a formative week in the nation’s capital in June 2023 as part of the 57th annual Washington Youth Tour. Over six action-packed days, these high school seniors toured monuments and museums, met with congressional staffers and learned what it means to be a co-op member. The teenagers engaged in a lively question-and-answer session with U.S. Rep. Ralph Norman of South Carolina (pictured) on the steps of the U.S. Capitol. They got to meet their peers from co-ops across the country. And they gained real-world experience by starting and operating their own co-op, which sold drinks and snacks at low prices throughout the week before returning capital credits to its members on the final day of the trip. One of our tourists produced his own video recapping the week. You can watch it here. |
