"I feel so blessed!" That's what Lisa Duvall said when she found out she'd won the 2011 WIRE Jenny Ballard Opportunity Scholarship for Women Returning to College. Duvall was among dozens of electric cooperative members applying for the $2,500 scholarship which helps women who may not have been able to attend college when they graduated from high school.
"I am stable and mature, and need financial assistance to complete my degree," Duvall wrote on her scholarship application. "Although I work full-time, I struggle financially as I am divorced and help my children, ages 22 and 29." Duvall, who is attending Anderson University, is a member of Horry Electric Cooperative in Conway. Her career goal is to be a mental health counselor in rural South Carolina.
WIRE, Women Involved in Rural Electrification, awards the scholarship yearly to a deserving electric cooperative member.
